Barcelona, Spain 1988-1995

Studio at the borough of “El Carmel”

Eva moved from Amsterdam to Barcelona during the summer of 1988 and rented a studio in the borough of ‘El Carmel‘, a municipal district of Horta-Guinardó, where gypsies and the very poor used to live. Barcelona used the 1992 Summer Olympics to modernize its urban structures. The last remains of El Carmel’s shantytown were demolished just before the games started. There are still signs on top of the hill showing where the shacks used to stand.

Soon after her arrival to Barcelona, Eva worked as an Art Tutor at the city’s main male prison. Several works done in ‘El Carmel’ were painted responding to her experiences at the ‘Modelo’ prison. Eva worked there until 1995 when she won the ‘Pollack Krasner Award’ and returned to London.
